How Important is Your Pet?

Pets play a valuable role in making new friends.  And one look at the well-cared for pets of Wesley Homes residents reveals a lot about the quality of life for pets as well as the neighborly culture of the community.

If you own a dog, those morning and evening walks are an important part of the daily routine – and provide an opportunity to get to know your neighbors.  “People met my dog before they met me,” said Ginny Edward, owner of “Bear”, a Shithzu and one of the “Pets of North Brownstone”.  Read the rest of this entry »

Nelson Kamithi, primary care giver, earns praise for his care and compassion

Sometimes we don’t know a good thing until we experience it.   And convincing a loved one that they will enjoy the help of a home health caregiver is not easy duty if Granddad is “set in his ways”.

Janelle Ansell, a license Long Term Care Administrator,  witnessed this familiar drama unfold in her own family as she watched her parents struggle to provide the support and care needed by her grandfather described by Ansell as “one tough customer.”

Boeing and Nordstrom bring cheer to residents

December 23rd, 2009

giving gifts

Wesley Homes Health Center residents received gifts yesterday as part of the Boeing Adopt a Senior program. The Boeing company adopted 130 skilled nursing residents and 40 assisted living residents. “We give them some gift ideas and Boeing employees bring something for each resident to be given to them at our Christmas parties,” said Cindy Marceyes, Activites Director.  “It means so much to our residents.”

To thank the Boeing employees, we send pictures with a Thank You card to them. Wesley Homes Health Center has been a recipient of this program for at least five years. Despite the down economy, Boeing adopted more seniors this year than before providing more generous gifts.

Nordstrom at Southcenter was also generous in their donation of 80 large poinsettias to the community. “They, too, have brought great joy to everyone,” said Marceyes. The pointsettias will be used as decorations around the community and as gifts for families, residents and volunteers.

Letter to our friends and business partners

December 19th, 2009

We understand that you, as a friend and business partner of Wesley Homes, may have questions about the recent incident at Wesley Homes Health Center and would have a special interest in knowing what steps have been taken to ensure this does not happen again.

State and Federal privacy laws prohibit us from discussing the care provided to the resident and the circumstances surrounding the incident but we felt the need to communicate what we can with you. These laws also require that we provide free access to and from the facility for our eligible residents.  Please know that the care and well-being of our residents is our number one priority.  To offer additional safety to our residents we have enhanced 24 hour staffing at the front desk at Wesley Homes Health Center and tightened the alarm system on all exit doors. Wesley Homes has been serving older adults since 1944 and has a strong reputation in the community. We are guided by our mission and focused on providing high quality care for our residents. Most important, we value our residents, future residents and family members. We will continue to post updates here at www.wesleyblog.org as they are available.

An investigation is in progress and Wesley Homes is cooperating with the Des Moines Police Department and the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS).

Tax Credit Programs Help Home Sellers as Well as Buyers

December 8th, 2009

Amongst the bewildering amount of information about tax credit loan entitlements, there are nuggets of information that can greatly increase your ability to sell your home faster and make your move to Wesley Homes Retirement Community to benefit your quality of life.

One need only read the Seattle Times article “First-time buyers benefit from prices, choices, tax credits” to understand that the new loan entitlement programs are “game-changers” in the home buying and selling strategies.

However, newspaper articles are necessarily broad in scope and therefore it helps to distill the information down to Read the rest of this entry »

Honey, What Are We Waiting For?

November 25th, 2009

Ericr

Eric Rovner, co-founder of Benevia, talks frankly about what you are giving up by waiting to make the move into Wesley Homes Retirement Community.

Influenced by the news on television about real estate values, many older adults are rethinking their plans to sell their homes amid the current economic uncertainty.  Despite related sacrifices, some are attempting to wait out the recession with high hopes that the paper value of their home will return to 2006 levels.

Wesley Homes has a long history of anticipating the needs of current and future residents and is proud to announce a new program designed to simplify the process of moving to the Des Moines and Lea Hill communities.  This new program, named “Easy Transitions”, launched in September 2009 in close partnership with Benevia.  Read the rest of this entry »
