The Authentic Face of Wesley Homes

Open House

Wesley Homes resident Berta Hamby welcomes guests into her home at Des Moines Open House.

Wesley Homes’ open house last Sunday in Des Moines was as much an invitation to make new friends as it was about touring living accommodations and all the amenities that residents enjoy.  If you missed this, make plans to attend the Lea Hill Open House 1:30 – 4:30, Sunday 9/27 in Auburn.

The most authentic face of Wesley homes is its residents.  And how they interacted with one another and guests on the day of the open house modeled what it’s like to live there.

After all, when you’re considering a lifecycle move, finances, floor plans and levels of care play a significant role in the decision making process.  But the tipping point is envisioning what it would be like to live at Wesley Homes.

“I absolutely love it here”, resident Berta Hamby told guests touring her 1 bedroom apartment in The Terrace Building.  “Home health care has made the difference here for me, “said Hamby, “instead of going to the health care center I can have home health right in my own home.”

“Wesley Homes covered all three of my long-term care requirements,” said resident Maynard “Doc” Campbell.  Doc and his wife Norma moved in last March.  They live on the 6th floor of The Terrace Building.  “I have 42 feet of deck,” said Campbell, “I see the forest, the mountains, the bay and great sunsets. My view is 180˚.”

Like others, I enjoyed the friendly and open discussions with the hosts and hostesses who welcomed us into their homes, as well as the many residents who volunteered as greeters and servers and were dressed up and “looking good” at their stations.

There were always two or three residents engaged in conversation with the greeters “on station”, affording another glimpse of the neighborly culture.

Guests exploring the campus got more than they bargained for; they met a lot of truly remarkable residents and were introduced to the many things that Wesley Homes does to accommodate their residents’ pursuit of interests and hobbies.

For example, overhearing Hamby enthusiastically recount attending Benaroya Hall’s  Marvin Hamlisch Pops: The Fabulous ‘50’s with Sha NaNa highlighted how enriching it is for Wesley Homes residents to have a van at their disposal to take them to cultural events all around the Seattle area.

“I am very impressed,” commented one guest to her husband as they sat with me for refreshments on the floor reserved for recreational and social entertainment.  This open house was their first introduction to Wesley Homes.

Thank you to all of the residents who welcomed visitors and who shared their beautiful homes! This was also my first time to visit Wesley Homes. What a nice community.
