It established September as National Preparedness Month in 2004. In addition, the Department of Homeland Security has instituted, through Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), its Ready campaign.

In May 2011, Joplin, MO, was devastated by a tornado with winds of at least 166 MPH. When Ola Mae Crawford, Wesley Homes resident, heard about the tornado that killed 116 people, she wanted to help in the best way she could: by creating art from her heart.
